Mercury Thermometer Reduction
Objective: Reduce the number mercury thermometers on campus.
Target:
Reduce the amount of mercury thermometers by 50% in the Chemistry teaching labs.
Action Items:
-
Environmental Health and Safety Dept. (EHS), in conjunction with the Chemistry Department, will purchase non-mercury filled thermometers as replacements for mercury filled ones.

There will be a one-for-one exchange of non-mercury thermometers for mercury thermometers.
-
Chemistry Department will not replace the non-mercury thermometers with mercury thermometers if any should break.
-
The projected timeline for this project is two months once the replacement thermometers have been purchased.

Reduce Fuel Usage
Objective:
Reduce fuel consumption of Missouri S&T owned vehicles.
Target:
Achieve at least a 10% reduction in the amount of fossil fuel being used by campus-owned vehicles by December 2010.
How you can help:

Turn off vehicle rather than idling.

Conduct teleconference meetings when possible.
-
Do not leave a vehicle running when it is unoccupied.
-
Carpool, walk or bike when possible.

Conduct vehicle utilization study.

Compare and monitor fuel used in fiscal 2008 vs. fiscal 2009
Action Item Status:
Monitor & Reduce Energy Usage
Objective:
Reduce energy intensity used based on KWh used / square foot.
Target:
Achieve at least a 3% reduction in the total amount of energy consumed per square foot by December 2010.
How you can help:

Turn off lights in unoccupied offices, classrooms and bathrooms.

Turn off or set to hibernate computers and printers at the end of each day.

Close shades or blinds during summer and winter months to reduce solar heat from the sun and to keep offices warmer during the winter.

Turn off power to appliances at night to reduce phantom power drainage.
Action Items:

Identify projects that will reduce energy usage and implement projects as appropriate.

An engineering firm has been contracted to conduct an investment grade audit of the Missouri S&T campus.
Reduce Solid Waste Generated on Campus
Objective:
Minimize waste generated on campus and increase recycling rate.
Target:
Achieve at least a 10% reduction in pounds generated per person by December 2010.
How you can help:

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle all items whenever possible.

Breakdown cardboard boxes for easy pick-up.
-
Bring a coffee cup from home. Refrain from using paper or styrofoam cups.
-
Purchase items only when necessary and in minimal amounts.
-
Purchase items with the least amount of packaging.
Action Item:

Participate in new employee and new student orientations to promote green initiatives.

Conduct awareness presentation to faculty, staff and students.
-
Compete in RecycleMania to measure waste generated.
-
Promote green reminders in e-mail signatures, Missouri S&T homepage and guiding the environment did you know(s).

Implement a mini-bin pilot program in Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall.

Monitor waste generated quarterly in Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall (trash and recyclable items).

50 bins added across campus to collect plastic.
